Annual Survivors Conference in Rwanda

10 March 2009

by Joie Pirkey

Last April Shouts of Joy Ministries took ten local people to Rwanda for a short term mission trip. The trip was amazing. One of the most important things that the group did was host and attend the Annual Memorial Conference for Widows and Orphans organized by Humura Ministries. Last year, thanks to Shouts of Joy Ministries donors, Humura Ministries was able to expand the Rwamagana conference to Kigali as well. Both conferences had over a thousand in attendance and many came forward to receive Christ as their personal savior. In the morning of the Rwamagana conference Doctors spoke about Post Traumatic Stress and how to deal with symptoms. In the afternoon many older survivors shared their testimonies to encourage the young congregation. Apostle Yoshua Masasu of Restoration Churches spoke about the Power of the Holy Spirit which encourages us to go on and our own Pastor, Tim Snell, spoke about the road to Damascus and how God has a plan even out of the most terrible of situations. These conferences had a great impact on the youth of Rwanda and are an important part of what Shouts of Joy Ministries supports in that region.

We are coming up on the memorial time in Rwanda again. Every April the nation holds a number of public ceremonies to honor the dead and also the survivors. Humura Ministries is hoping to host their annual conference again, but as you can imagine funds are scarce. Although we realize that food, medical supplies, school fees, housing and clothing are very important, spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ is what Rwanda needs the most. There is no other way for these young survivors to find the ability to forgive and to receive forgiveness; no other way to find purpose from such a broken place; no other way to really find true life. And so we implore you to give.

We are attempting to raise $5,000.00 for the two conferences which will include a small lunch, traveling fees for orphans to get to the conference, rent for the facility, and so much more.

If you could please, please, please send contributions by March 24, 2009, we will be able to get the funds there in time. (If you miss this deadline, please send the money anyway because we can use it for multiple other projects.) Thank you. Thank you. Murakoze. Murakoze.

In April 2008 Shouts of Joy Ministries brought Pastor Tim Snell of Christ Church of the Valley in Appleton Wisconsin to Rwanda where he preached for hundreds of survivors of the genocide of 1994. Tim’s sermon was so powerful and deeply impacting that Author Tracey Lawrence wrote about it in her recent work with Eric Irivuzumugabe titled My Father, Maker of the Trees “How I survived the Rwandan Genocide”. The book will be released this August from Baker Publishing House. Here is a short excerpt from Pastor Snell’s sermon:
